Backpacking the Rainy Season in SihanoukVille, Cambodia

2008 has been a banner year for SihanoukVille. We've had more tourist here during the summer months than we had in all of 2006.

a few improvements to town.

* Utopia's swimming pool is almost finished
* Monkey Republic just celebrated their 3rd anniversary.
* Victory Hill now has 3 places with swimming pools.
* Victory Beach has been cleaned up.
* Otres and Ocheteaul Beaches are expanding. The strip from one end to the other is now about 4 kilometers (including the empty area in back of the new Sokha Resort going up someday).

* Decent low end rooms are available on most beach areas from $4 and up (Utopia's rooms start at $2)
* More booze than ever is flowing through town and some falls into the sea.
* Happy Pizza's owners are happier than ever.

The bus from Koh Kong, Cambodia / Trat, Thailand is booming since the completion of all the bridges between Koh Kong and SihanoukVille. You can even get a bus between Koh Kong and Kampot / Kep.

Rainy days and Sundays

Sihanoukville in the rain has been quite a blast this year.

Top Cat movie theater is doing well, Fortuna casino, Q&A Bookstore, Boom Boom Room, Monkey Republic, and Utopia have all been doing very well, despite several rainy days.

Utopia's putting in a swimming pool, and has forgone it's free rooms for nicer $2 dorm rooms. The crowd during the summer is much mellower than in the winter.

Motorcycle rentals have been doing well, as there's not been a crackdown lately (tourist driving without a Cambodian driver's licence).

The area around Beach Road, Ocheteaul Beach and Serendipity has become the place to be recently. Most places have dropped their prices a bit, as the town won't be full again for another few months.

Other than that, not much new.

Let us know!

SihanoukVille Deals

Khmer New Years is finally over, and the town (but not the beach) has quieted somewhat.

After every room in town being filled for a week, now occupancy is at around 50 percent.

Which means it's a great time to get a good deal in SihanoukVille.

Victory Hill at night has been a popular destination. Victory Beach is one of the nicest beaches in town now.

Utopia and Monkey Republic are still filled filled every night, as are a few beach bars.

Otres beach is still the quietest, and nicest beach in town, but this won't last forever. You can still get free accommodations on the beach, but Utopia is charging $2 for a dorm room now. Still a good deal. Especially if you like pizza and spaghetti buffets (veggie of course) and 40 cent draft beer.

Occasional booze cruises and island parties have been sold out every time, and we seem to be lucky to have a full moon here about once a month. Most of the island boat trips have gone up in price, but you can still get a round trip for $6 to some of the nearer islands. $15 gets you breakfast and lunch, pickup at your guesthouse (and return), an island or three, and snorkeling for the day.

Motorcycles (100cc) are rented again everywhere for $5 a day, and bigger bikes are available for bigger bucks.

Looking for some info on Chez Burt in Ream National Park, if anyone knows. Looks very nice.

The airport should be open by the end of the year for flights from Thailand, but it's still cheap and easy to get here from either Vietnam or Thailand. All the bridges from Koh Kong to SihanoukVille have been completed, and this has cut down the travel time and cost from Thailand (Trat) to SihanoukVille (and back) considerably.

have any info? send us some comments!

Khmer New Year

Khmer (Cambodian) New Years is just around the corner. April 13-15th (and it really starts a couple weeks ahead of time). The beach will be full for a week, mostly with tourists from all over Cambodia, plus the locals take a vacation as well. Best to call ahead and make reservations, between the 10th and 20th of April. More free rooms are "sold" during this period, than any other. Everyone's sleeping on the beach, 'cause all the rooms are sold out. And that's at double or triple price.

You'll see people dancing in the street for New Years. (especially before midnight) and you'll probably get wet, as the tradition is to throw water or bags of water at people (outside). Everyone gets dressed up and goes to the Wats (Buddhist Temples) at least once during the New Year, to celebrate. It's the biggest Cambodian holiday of the year. If you're looking for rooms, look to Victory Hill, downtown, and around beach road near Serendipity Beach.

For more info, check out SihanoukVille Backpacker website.

It's a fun time here.... Come see for yourself!

Get a job

Many short term jobs in SihanoukVille if you want to stay a few months.
Engish jobs pay $5 to $7 and their looking for native English speakers who will stay a minimum of 3 months.

Jobs behind a bar at Monkey Republic, Utopia, a couple places off Ocheteaul Beach, right on the beach, and a couple places on Victory Hill. These ususally pay free room, food and booze.

Backpacker News

Utopia just had another full moon party. Seem to have them about every month.
Relief for Otres beach. They were due to have construction there, but everything remains. Still one of the hardest to get to, (and nicest) beaches in town.
Independence Beach is gone for now (except for Independence Hotel guests and in front of SeaBreeze guesthouse). Construction.

Room prices have been going up recently, and will probably stay up until the end of April, after Khmer New Year.

all for now.
